BCFC World

BCFC World has had it's first week of full service, including live commentary, so it's time to take a look at how it’s faring.

Tackling the positives first, it is fair to say that BCFC World reached its pinnacle after the Blackpool game by showing an exclusive interview with our Editor, Brian Flynn.

Brian was offered an exclusive 'pay as you say' contract for this interview, which essentially meant that the more often he said "I live in Manhattan" and "www.theincider.com", the more he got paid. It is understood that at the last count he managed to utter these lines 23 times in one minute. So well done Brian, a personal best there, I think.

Adam Baker offers RedTop a lick of his ice cream.

Edson was in line to do the interview initially, but he was replaced by Brian at the last minute after receiving a rather nasty looking injury to the face from an elbow, whilst approaching the camera. Funny that. However, rumours are that City wanted eye candy for the girls and Edson just didn’t fit the bill.

On a more serious note (yes, the last bit was actually an attempt at humour), the BCFC World commentary service has been nothing short of a PR disaster.

While the quality and content of the TV news and features is excellent – even with the grainy 56k dial-up link – the live match commentary has failed, leaving those who paid for the service unable to listen to the games even though they coughed up. In principle I have no problem with this being a 'pay to access' service, providing the quality matches the financial outlay. I am not pointing fingers directly at individuals, far from it. Adam Baker and Ed Furniss do an excellent job and were clearly unaware of the problems during the Wigan game, as they were in Wigan at the time with no Internet access.

However, if the club is going to charge people for a service, then they have an obligation to deliver what they have promised. And this has clearly not been the case so far. I understand there were problems of access to the commentary panel during the Blackpool game, but as I was at the game it is hard for me to comment. However, the Wigan game is the one that caused most consternation amongst fans. There was no commentary whatsoever for this game, and when you are charging people for a service they don't receive I believe they have every right to be angry and upset. To add insult to injury, most fans logged on to the Wigan site and found they could listen to a rather biased Wigan commentary for free. All well and good, but when you're down to ten men and two nil behind, it's not ideal to have someone from Wigan screaming "We are top of the league" though your speakers.

I assumed that the commentary service would be similar to last season, the only difference being that you would pay to access this part of the site. But the service provider appears to be guilty of trying to run before they can walk, and has attempted to introduce a flashy new console, when all we really want is our good old Radio Bristol commentary team.

If BCFC World is to be a success then the problems with the live commentary section of the service need to be ironed out immediately, as this is the main reason why most people have subscribed. If the service does not improve vastly in this area, from what has been seen so far, then Bristol City can expect an awful lot of people demanding their money back in the coming weeks. And rightly so.

I never thought I’d hear myself say it – but here goes: “Bring back Geoff Twentyman!”
